Paddington Victorian Terrace – Light-Filled Heritage Home
Stephen and Kathleen owned a grand heritage Victorian terrace that had lost its elegance over time. The home had become dark and dysfunctional. They wanted a light, airy house with more space, better flow, and flexible use. It also needed to be welcoming for extended family and friends—a comfortable place for informal gatherings or even a “home away from home.”
Creating Distinct but Connected Zones
PWA’s approach was to design clearly defined zones that remain visually connected. Combined with detailed interior and lighting design, this strategy brings the new spaces to life. Now, family members and visitors can work simultaneously, independent but never isolated. They can easily join social events or retreat to private spaces whenever they wish.
Inspired by Rear Lane Terraces
The winding rear lanes inspired the design of the house’s interior layers. Several terraced levels create a flowing journey through the living spaces. At the heart of the home is the kitchen and living area, adjacent to a central courtyard. This space acts like a spine, with secondary rooms and functions branching off it.
The outdoor area enhances this flow. Roof spaces turn into hanging gardens, and stepped terraces connect different levels, blending indoor and outdoor living.
A Thoughtful Colour Palette and Details
Colour played a key role in linking old and new. The existing house featured a traditional Victorian palette of deep reds and greens. This palette continues subtly in the new work with a modern touch.
Additional interior details include custom joinery and lighting designed to complement the character and function of each room perfectly.
Enjoying Versatile Family Spaces
The family now enjoys the many spaces the house offers. A favorite feature is the terrace courtyard that spills out from the kitchen. It doubles as an open-air dining room on warm summer evenings—perfect for gatherings.
